Today, Amtrak announced that it has obtained $275 million of insurance protection from Penn Union Re Ltd., an independent special purpose insurer based in Bermuda, which has issued catastrophe bonds to fund and collateralize this insurance.

“Safety must continue to be our highest priority,” Amtrak President & CEO Joe Boardman told the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure in his submitted testimony today.

In preparation for the Amtrak Vermonter service that is being rerouted through the Knowledge Corridor starting Dec. 29, Amtrak has been actively reaching out to local authorities and meeting with community groups and schools in an effort to raise public visibility on rail safety awareness.
September is Rail Safety Month and Amtrak California and Caltrans are asking Californians to always practice safety when crossing train tracks. A giant rail safety pledge banner will make its way across the state throughout the month of September collecting pledges and signatures including those of local mayors and family members of those who have been killed in rail-related incidents.
Today is International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) and Amtrak is joining Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI), and the Association of American Railroads in heightening awareness of the importance of railroad crossing safety.
Amtrak, in conjunction with the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), has launched a preliminary engineering study for rehabilitation or possible replacement of the 108-year-old Susquehanna River Rail Bridge. The study will comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and examine various alternatives while considering environmental and historical impacts to the community.
