November 1, 2018 Amtrak Downeaster to Expand Service in time for the Thanksgiving Travel Season

PORTLAND, ME. – Just in time for the holiday travel season, the Amtrak Downeaster will be expanding weekday service of all trains to Freeport and Brunswick, Maine; four of five daily round trips will serve Freeport and Brunswick on weekends. Currently, the Downeaster makes five daily round trips between Portland and Boston with only three extending to Freeport and Brunswick.

The expanded service will make it more convenient for travelers north of Portland to take the early morning train, which arrives in Boston by 8:00am each weekday, as well as those headed to Boston for sporting events or concerts at the TD Garden, located right in Boston North Station. It will also provide northbound travelers with new early afternoon arrivals in Freeport and Brunswick each day, which will be popular with shoppers; there will be more evening arrival options as well.

The Downeaster is a reserved service and tickets sell out quickly, particularly during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period, so customers are encouraged to plan ahead and book early. Last year, Downeaster ridership saw ridership increases throughout the Thanksgiving travel period including a 23% increase the Sunday following Thanksgiving.

The Downeaster is an Amtrak-operated, intercity passenger rail service connecting Maine and Boston with convenient, frequent and affordable daily service. Multi-ride tickets and discounts are available. Downeaster coach cars offer spacious seating areas with tray tables as well as free Wi-fi and electrical outlets to help passengers stay connected enroute to their destinations. Train cars have convenient storage areas for carry-on luggage either above the seats or at the end of each car. Table seating is available in the Downeaster Café, which offers a variety of snacks and beverages featuring Maine-made products.

Last year, Amtrak had its largest passenger count to date during the Thanksgiving week with more than 777,000 riders on its trains across the country, and its busiest day in history with more than 160,000 customers on the Sunday following Thanksgiving.
