Union Station offers live seasonal music, an Amtrak gift shop and an exhibit

CHICAGO – Amtrak is offering passengers traveling through Chicago Union Station in December several opportunities to celebrate the season with a free concert series, the only Amtrak gift shop in the country and an exhibit on transportation in the Chicago area.

America’s Railroad®, in partnership with Clear Channel Outdoor and with support from Classic Party Rental, is bringing to Chicago Union Station the acclaimed Merit School of Music whose students will perform live concerts on select dates in the Great Hall from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The concerts include a String Quarter on Dec. 8, a Choir on Dec. 9 and 16, a Trumpet Ensemble on Dec. 15 and a Brass Quintet on Dec. 17.

Those in the gift giving spirit can stop by the first-ever Amtrak Merchandise Store, open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. (except Saturdays) opposite of the Amtrak baggage claim. Featuring railroad toys, posters, clothing items, train collectibles and more, the store only accepts credit or debit cards for items that are marked down considerably from their original prices. Customers that make an online purchase while at the store can get free shipping on their order using a promo code provided by the store employee.

Also open at Chicago Union Station through the December holidays is the Terminal Town Exhibit, created by the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development at DePaul University. It features interactive panels and displays of information about the history of transportation in the Chicago area including one that explains Amtrak ownership of the iconic station building, shows the passenger railroad’s ridership growth and looks to the building’s future. After viewing, take the “Terminal Test” and become eligible for a prize.
