America’s Railroad® and premiere black news site launch online contest inviting readers to share their inspirational black history journey
Beginning Feb. 3, visitors to TheRoot.com will be able to select a historical figure they’d like to travel with, then using an interactive map with black history landmarks, choose an Amtrak destination where they’d like to travel. Each week during the month of February, Amtrak and The Root will randomly select a lucky winner’s email and they will receive two round-trip Amtrak tickets, good for Amtrak travel anywhere in the country.
“This is an exciting partnership for Amtrak,” said Darlene Abubakar, senior director of national advertising for Amtrak. “Black History Month is a great time to not only reflect on the important contributions made by so many Americans, but it allows us the opportunity to dream and to learn. These imaginary Amtrak journeys to these real-life historical landmarks will spark conversations that will continue far beyond Black History Month.”
The “Our Roots, Our Railroad: Take An Amtrak Ride Through Black History” initiative is just one of the many ways that The Root and Amtrak have joined together to celebrate Black culture and recognize the great achievements made by African-Americans. This partnership is symbolic both during Black History Month and throughout the year.
“The Root is excited to partner with Amtrak for ‘Our Roots, Our Railroad’,” said Donna Byrd, Publisher. “We hope to engage our readers on a journey that will inform them about the influence of African-Americans. Across the country, the destinations along Amtrak’s routes serve as a reminder of our past and an inspiration for our future.”
Amtrak is America’s Railroad®, the nation’s intercity passenger rail service and its high-speed rail operator. Amtrak and its state and commuter partners move people, the economy and the nation forward. Formally known as the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, Amtrak is governed by a nine member board of directors appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Anthony R. Coscia is board chairman and Jeffrey R. Moreland is vice chairman. In FY 2014, nearly 31 million passengers traveled on Amtrak on more than 300 daily trains – at speeds up to 150 mph (241 kph) – that connect 46 states, the District of Columbia and three Canadian Provinces.
