25 percent of new hires to be veterans by 2015

LOS ANGELES – Amtrak has a long history of providing career opportunities to veterans as well as active military members and is participating in a “Hiring Our Heroes” job fair today at Los Angeles Union Station in partnership with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, and a host of other organizations.

America’s Railroad® values the leadership, reliability and high-tech skills veterans bring to Amtrak. In a continued effort to support the nation’s service men and women, Amtrak has set a goal of ensuring 25 percent of new hires are veterans by 2015.

To meet the demand of employee vacancies due to retirement and new projects, Amtrak expects to hire more than 3,000 employees over the next year. In fiscal year 2012, more than 14 percent of new hires were veterans.

In addition, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War and honor those who have served, Amtrak painted a locomotive red, white and blue with a specially designed “America’s Railroad Salutes Our Veterans” logo and 50 stars around the bottom. This locomotive is operating on routes around the nation and is in Los Angeles as part of the job fair.
