CHICAGO – Powered by a specially painted locomotive celebrating veterans and showcasing the past, present and future of America’s Railroad®, the Amtrak Exhibit Train will be open to free tours this weekend at the Amtrak station in Burlington, Iowa. Other exhibits on station platforms also will educate and entertain visitors about depot improvement plans and railroading.

The Exhibit Train will be open from at 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday, Aug. 24, and again from 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 25, with veterans invited to be first to board on both days. A drawing will be held for pairs of free Amtrak California Zephyr round-trip tickets to Omaha or Chicago (subject to terms and conditions).

The Exhibit Train features displays including workable signals, virtual sleeping accommodation tours and trivia, the locomotive control stand and horns. In addition, it features photos, uniforms, vintage advertising and memorabilia from the beginning of Amtrak in 1971 to today’s modern-sleeping cars and high-speed rail service. Exclusive Amtrak collectibles are also available for purchase.

The locomotive with the Exhibit Train commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War and honors those who have served. Amtrak painted the locomotive red, white and blue with a specially designed “America’s Railroad Salutes Our Veterans” logo and 50 stars. It is a symbol of an Amtrak commitment of 25 percent of new hires to be veterans by 2015. Locomotive 42 was chosen in celebration of the 42nd year of Amtrak service.

The Exhibit Train includes two locomotives, three renovated baggage cars and one bistro car, all with historic paint schemes. This is a refreshed and updated version of the popular 40th anniversary train that celebrated Amtrak history with a tour in 2011-2012.

Also joining the Exhibit Train with be the Friends of the Burlington Depot with membership information, presentations on building’s history and plans for the restoration of the station’s main waiting room; other railroad related exhibits, including Operation Lifesaver, a rail industry sponsored group educating the public about safety; flood control fire safety and tourism exhibitors and refreshment sales. Young train fans will enjoy Chuggington Depot, a dedicated area children’s play and activities.
