Energy-efficiency of rail travel to be showcased
WASHINGTON – For the third straight year, Amtrak is a presenting sponsor of the Capital Pride Festival’s Green Village, where festival attendees experience and learn about energy-efficient travel and sustainability efforts at America’s Railroad®.
The Capital Pride Festival will take place on Sunday, June 9, on Pennsylvania Avenue from noon to 7 p.m. As presenting sponsor, Amtrak will showcase the company’s commitment to preserving the environment. Visitors stopping by the Amtrak booth will enjoy family activities and games, learn more about Amtrak service to more than 500 destinations, and have the opportunity to win free round-trip travel vouchers to experience Amtrak travel on the Northeast Corridor.
“At Amtrak we strive to provide greener transportation options for passengers,” said Celia Pfleckl, Amtrak senior environmental engineer. “Our partnership with the Capital Pride Festival allows us to share information on how to be a more energy-efficient traveler.”
Last year, Amtrak earned Climate Registered™ status by successfully measuring its carbon footprint according to The Climate Registry’s best-in-class program. Achieving this status recognizes the steps Amtrak has taken toward measuring and better understanding its carbon footprint. In line with these efforts, Amtrak has included specific energy, fuel, and greenhouse gas emission reduction targets in its five-year strategic plan. Additionally, Amtrak has a comprehensive industrial material recycling program that helps conserve resources by reusing material, recycling waste and reducing environmental pollution.
Amtrak is America’s Railroad®, the nation’s intercity passenger rail service and its high-speed rail operator. Amtrak and its state and commuter partners move people, the economy and the nation forward. Formally known as the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, Amtrak is governed by a nine member board of directors appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Anthony R. Coscia is board chairman and Jeffrey R. Moreland is vice chairman. In FY 2014, nearly 31 million passengers traveled on Amtrak on more than 300 daily trains – at speeds up to 150 mph (241 kph) – that connect 46 states, the District of Columbia and three Canadian Provinces.
